A dozen upcoming Kenyan photographers (photojournalists as well as advanced students of photography) have explored the Juakali economy in an around Nairobi.
They worked in a two-weeks-workshop on the topic "photo-essay", that means how to tell a story through photographs by using dramaturgical effects and developing one's own narrative style. They looked into the different aspects of Juakali, this typical phenomenon of the informal sector in Kenya with its various economic, social, historic and human facets.
The workshop was conducted by Eva Leitolf, Munich/Germany. Eva Leitolf studied design and photojournalism at Essen University where she graduated in 1994. Then she completed a three-years-course of art at the California Institute of Arts. Since 1990 she has been working as a free-lance photographer mainly for the magazines of the big dailies and weeklies in Germany and the US. She has received several awards for her exhibitions.
